Peter Wallace Receives TAPPI’s 2011 Herman Joachim Distinguished Service Award

03 February 2011

Mississauga, ON Canada (February 3, 2011) – Arclin, a leading provider of bonding, surfacing and related products for today’s engineered building, industrial materials and natural resources markets announced today that their own Pete Wallace will receive the 2011 TAPPI Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award.  The award is a special honor that TAPPI bestows and exemplifies leadership that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the Association.  Pete Wallace is currently the Business Director of Industrial Specialties for Arclin serving the nonwoven, transportation and engineering markets.

“We are very proud of Pete’s accomplishments and the tireless contributions he has made to the industry”, says Randy Schwartzhoff, SVP Engineered Materials for Arclin.  “Pete brings a wealth of industry experience and knowledge to our program and we are delighted he has been honored with this award. “

Wallace’s career started in 1968 when he graduated from the New York College of Forestry & Environmental Science at Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in science.  After college, Wallace went to work in the wood products industry, ultimately migrating into the resins business, holding positions with Reichhold Chemical, BTL and Hexion Specialty Chemical.  Wallace has been with Arclin since 2009.

He has been a member of TAPPI since 1980, working to form the Building and Industrial Mat Committee in the TAPPI Nonwovens Division. He started the committee’s annual meeting, the only committee of the Nonwovens Division to have an independent annual meeting. He has served in all committee offices, including chair of both the Building Industrial Mat and the Binders and Additives committees.

Wallace has twice received the TAPPI Nonwovens Leadership Award for his work in developing and growing the Building and Industrial Committee in 1996 and his work as Chairman of the Nonwoven Division 2006. He has been instrumental in the success of TAPPI’s new Innovative Nonwovens Conference held annually in the fall. He also became the leader in forming the TAPPI Nonwovens Insulation Committee in 2003.

Through his leadership, Wallace has continued to persuade people to actively serve on newly created committees, resulting in gaining new members for TAPPI.

In 1994 Herman L. Joachim made a gift to TAPPI that was used to establish the Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award Fund. Since that time the Fund has provided a cash honorarium to each year’s honoree. Herman L. Joachim was a TAPPI member for more than 70 years. He joined TAPPI while working as a chemist at the Bogalusa Paper Company in Louisiana. He later managed paper mills throughout the United States and was responsible for expansions and modernizations in the industry. He also enjoyed a successful career as an engineering consultant.

Wallace will be honored at the Tuesday evening, May 3, 2011, awards dinner during the 2011 PaperCon Conference at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in conjunction with the 2011 PaperCon meeting in Covington, Ky. USA.   www.papercon.org
